Born in 1944 in Odessa, Peter Weibel enrolled in courses in comparative literature, medicine, logic, philosophy and film studies in Paris and Wien. His mulitfaceted activities soon made him a key figure in European media art. He has held a number of professorships, some of them concurrently: professor at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna from 1984; from 1984 to 1989 Professor of Video and Digital Art at the Center for Media Study of the State University of New York in Buffalo, N.Y. In 1989 he founded the Institut für Neue Medien at Städelschule in Frankfurt, whose director he was until 1995. From 1986 to 1995 he was Artistic Director of the Ars Electronica in Linz and from 1993 to 1999 Austria's commissioner for the Venice Biennale. From 1993 to 1998 he was chief curator of the Neue Galerie in Graz and since 1999 he has been the director of the ZKM|Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe [Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe].
