THE COLLECTION 1900–2011
11 Spaces, 11 Decades, 11 Interventions

25 March 2011 to 23 September 2012

LENTOS offers visitors a large format opportunity to gain extensive insights into the Collection and become acquainted with both the abundance and the contradictoriness of the holdings.

We promote contemporary perspectives and expand the presentation, showing the years 1960 to 2011 – beginning in late March 2011 – in a new light. Each of the eleven spaces is assigned to a decade. The chronological principle is perforated by surprising interventions by artists from the 19th century up to the present. The works enter
into associative connections with one another, intervening obviously, provocatively or even covertly.

The unconventional presentation is thus bracketed by 111 years from a rich pool, a period full of upheavals, diverse styles, and changes. It is an exhibition that enables
individual approaches to the works, provokes thinking, shows new acquisitions and donations. Unorthodox combinations stimulate new perspectives and offer the public manifold glimpses into the development of Modernism and the purchasing policies of a museum.
