Karel Appel
Born 1921 in Amsterdam
has lived since1972 primarily in New York

1942-44 |
The painter, sculptor
and poet studied from 1942 to 1944 at the Rijkacademie voor Beeldende
Kunsten in Amsterdam. |

1948 |
Together with his artist
colleagues Corneille and Constant, he took part in the founding
of the Nederlands Experimentele Groep in Amsterdam in 1948, which
entered the international group COBRA, founded in Paris, the same
year. |
 |
|
1950 |
In 1950, Appel settled
in Paris. |
 |
|
1957 |
Beginning in 1957,
the multitalented artist undertook extended trips to the USA and
other places. |
 |
|
1958 |
In 1958 he created
the wall paintings for the Dutch Pavilion at the World Expo in Brussels
and for the UNESCO building in Paris. |

1960 |
From 1960 on, he received
numerous distinctions and international museum exhibitions. Important
work groups of sculptures were created during the 1960s. |

1987 |
designs for a ballet
for the Paris Opera. |

1994/1995 |
Appel devoted himself
primarily to stage design for the Netherlands Opera. |

Appel lives and works
in New York as well as in studios in Connecticut, Monaco and Tuscany. |
