No fewer than eighty works by Christian Ludwig Attersee are to be found in the collection of the New Gallery of the City of Linz. They are now being shown on the occasion of the sixtieth birthday of the artist (on August 28th) in a many facetted exhibition that is significantly larger than originally planned. The collage "Papiereck" (Paper Corner) was already acquired by Peter Baum as head of the New Gallery of the City of Linz in 1974, during his first year as director. This is a subtle work full of esprit belonging to the earliest works among those now being shown in Linz. The cycle of nine serial colour graphic works under the title "Attersees Schönheit", (the beauty of Attersee) already appeared in 1970. These works show the characteristic wealth of invention and the sheer joy in graphic fable telling that underline the first "Austro-popper". Among the most important graphic works in the exhibition are the "Die zweibeinige Gotik" (Two Legged Gothic)edition published in 1988, this comprises five sets each of five silk screen prints. Attersee painted a Linz cityscape "Linz-Bild" with "Brucknergeweih" (Bruckner Antlers) in 1990, his homage to the city of his youth from a perspective combining attraction with mockery. The large canvas "Sonne auf Braut" ("Sun on the Bride"), 1993 counts among the artists principle works of the 1990's. It is also among the highlights of this presentation that can be seen until November 5th. Peter Baum |
