Biography

5 April 1900 in Haag am Hausruck, Upper Austria
30 September 1985 in Santa Barbara, California

Childhood and youth in Upper Austria, grammar school in Linz.


1919 apprentice with the architect G.Schmidthammer in Linz.
1920 assistant of architect E.Margold in Darmstadt, Germany.
1921 -1923 studies at the Bauhaus in Weimar with Itten and Kandinsky.
1924 stay in Italy.
1925-28 teacher and head of the workshop for "print and advertisement" at the Bauhaus in Dessau.
1928 - 1938 works in Berlin as painter, photographer, graphic, exhibition and advertisement designer (e.g. as art director for the Vogue and manager of the advertising agency Dorland).
1929 first solo exhibition at the artists' association MAERZ in Linz.
1930 designs the exhibitions of the German "Werkbund" in Paris and
1931 the "Baugewerkschaften" in Berlin together with Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer and László Moholy-Nagy.
1938 emigration to New York. Bayer designs several exhibitions for the Museum of Modern Art.
1939 lectureship at the Black Mountain College, North Carolina.
1945 art director of Dorland International.
1946 - 1975 he lives in Aspen, Colorado, works as architect and design consultant at the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies, the Container Corporation of America and Arco.
1961 solo exhibition at the Bauhaus Archive Berlin and another in
1963 at the Neue Galerie der Stadt Linz.
1968 design of the "Articulated Wall" for the Olympic Games in Mexico. Solo exhibition at the Museum for Applied Arts (MAK), Vienna.
1973 he receives an honorary doctorate of the Technical University Graz. Design of the sculpture "Double Ascension" for the Arco Plaza in Los Angeles.
1974/75 retrospective of Bayer's prints at the Bauhaus Archive Berlin.
1975 move to Montecito, California.
1976 exhibition at the Neue Galerie der Stadt Linz. Design of a fountain sculpture in front of the Brucknerhaus concert hall in Linz.
1977 / 78 U.S. touring exhibition of his photographic works.
1980 founding exhibition of the Herbert Bayer Archive at the Denver Art Museum, Colorado.
1982 and 1987 touring exhibitions of the Bauhaus Archive Berlin,
1987 at the gallery of Upper Austria (Oberösterreichische Landesgalerie).
Spring 2000 the Neue Galerie der Stadt Linz, the Gallery of Upper Austria and Schloss Starhemberg in Haag present a comprehensive and varied view of Herbert Bayer's complete works.
