Biography
The Neue Galerie der Stadt Linz is organising this exhibition in commemoration of this great artist, who was born one hundred years ago. The museum owns approximately 60 works (mostly paintings and photography) beginning from his early Bauhaus period (1925) to the early seventies. His paintings illustrate his search for dense abstraction, which springs from his study of nature and is based on basic geometric elements. Most of the Herbert Bayer collection of the Neue Galerie der Stadt Linz was donated by the artist himself and his wife Joella Bayer. Already in 1976 the Neue Galerie der Stadt Linz showed a great retrospective of the Bauhaus - master and universalist, who was born in Upper Austria and moved after teaching at the Bauhaus in Dessau (typography and print media) to Berlin and then to New York and Aspen, where he was successful as a designer, landscape architect and artist.

Given the range of his work, Herbert Bayer can be rated as one the most important artists from Upper Austria in the 20th century, -besides Alfred Kubin.

Born in 1900 in Haag am Hausruck, he began his career studying at the Bauhaus and subsequently developed further to become known as a Bauhaus "Master".

Bayer started to work in Linz as a graphic designer in his early years. He then moved on to Weimar, Dessau and Berlin, before he emigrated to the USA in 1938, where he worked as a graphic and landscape designer, until he died in 1985 in Santa Barbara, California. In his time he has become one of the most renowned and influential artists in design as well as painting, photography and sculpture.

Excellent contacts between Bayer and the Neue Galerie of Linz existed since the sixties. In 1976 Peter Baum curated Austria's first comprehensive retrospective of his works at the Neue Galerie. In 1977 the artist created, as part of "forum metall" (an external range of exhibits), a fountain sculpture in front of the Brucknerhaus concert hall.

Herbert Bayer's centenary birthday on April 5th 2000 presents the opportunity of a retrospective hommage, which is shared between the Neue Galerie, the Oberösterreichische Landesgalerie (Gallery of Upper Austria) and his native town Haag am Hausruck with a diverse exhibition programme.

The Neue Galerie of Linz concentrates its exhibition on Bayer's works as an eminent photo-artist and painter. For the first time the complete Bayer collection of our museum is on show, comprising 70 works, which have in part been generously donated to the Neue Galerie by the artist himself and his wife Joella Bayer.
