Biography of Willy Eisenschitz

1889 born in Vienna on october 27th as son of a Jewish lawyers´family
1911 Studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna
1912 Studies at the Academy in Paris
1913 Marriage with the French art student Claire Bertrand
1914 arrested and deported into a camp near Angers
1915/16 Birth of daughter Evelyn and his son David in the camp
1917 For serious health problems and tuberculosis Eisenschitz stays in Switzerland.
1919 Participation at an exhibition of the Vienna Künstlerhaus
1920 Return to Paris and settles in Rue de Tournon
1921 Travels in the Provence, to Menton and Italy
1922 The Eisenschitz spend six months in Florence and Assisi.
1923 Relapse into Tuberculosis
1924 First Solo Exhibition at the gallery of Berthe Weill, Paris
1925 Settles in Dieulefit
1927 Moves to South France, to Minimes, near Toulon
1929 First Trip to Spain (Toledo and Lerida)
1931 Heavy Arthritis: Eisenschitz cannot paint in oil and turns to watercolour.
1933 Friendship with Aldous Huxley on the occasion of an exhibition at Sanary sur Mer.
Participation at an exhibition of the Vienna Künstlerhaus
1934 Exhibition at the Adams Brothers Gallery London
1935 Exhibitions in Honolulu, Lausanne, Toulon.
Acquaintance with Jean Giono, whose works Eisenschitz illustrates.
1936 Second Trip to Spain (Alicante and Sagunto)
1937 Reception of the gold medal at the Paris World Exhibition for "Interieur with Figures"
1938 Trip to Ireland.
Exhibitions in London and at the Gallery Marseille, Paris
1940 Exhibition of Watercolours in London and Santiago de Chile
1943 Questioned by the Police in Minimes, flight into the mountains to Dieulefit, pseudonym "Villiers"
1944 Son David arrested by the Nazis.
1945 After the end of war, return to Minimes
1949 Exhibition at the Gallery Allard "a painters´family" with works by Willy Eisenschitz, Claire Bertrand and daughter Evelyn Marc
1950 Exhibition at the Gallery Marcel Bernheim
1951 First trip to Ibiza, exhibition at the Gallery Palmes.
Since 1952 Willy Eisenschitz spends several months each year in Paris.
1952 Participation at the group show "The 3rd dimension" at the Gallery Durand-Ruel.
In the following years many travels through the south of France.
1957 Retrospective of 60 works from 1926 to 1957 at the Museum of Toulon.
The "View on Montmajour" is acquired by the French State.
1958 Eisenschitz discovers the landscapes of the Languedoc and the lakes of Bages near Narbonne.
1959 Three-week trip to the Sudan thanks to a scholarship.
He buys a house in the Alpilles.
Since 1960 many exhibitions in France on a regular basis.
1968 Exhibition at Seyne sur Mer, Lyon and Paris.
Death of Claire Bertrand.
Eisenschitz moves to Paris and continues to paint in the south of France as well.
1972 He discovers the islands before Marseille.
Exhibitions in Japan.
1973 Exhibition in the cultural center of Amiens.
1974 Death of Willy Eisenschitz on July 8th.
