A retrospective of his most recent works The Neue Galerie is happy to open the new season with an exhibition of paintings by Jürgen Messensee, who is one of the leading contemporary artists in Austria. He is consequently exploring one topic: the human figure. Influenced by great masters such as Diego Velasquez and Pablo Picasso, he is particularly engaged in the female nude and the head, very often reduced to the mouth only. Messensee considers himself to be a naturalist and asserts that he has never painted an abstract picture. Referring to the perception of human beauty the artists develops abbreviations and reductions from few black strokes, which are joined to bright colours of orange, red and pink to create a complex vision. It is a powerful brushstroke, which is characteristic for the paintings, "mouthes" and "catamaranes" of the Viennese artist Jürgen Messensee. His colours have a strong presence to which the big canvases owe their direct sensual touch beside their intellectualism Peter Baum The exhibition catalogue: 120 pages, colour reproductions, ATS 280.- Exhibition poster: ATS 60.- |
