The Austrian artist Arnulf Rainer (born 1929) became internationally known for his overpaintings of existing paintings and for his work over photographs and on paper. Rainer can be considered as part of the long Austrian tradition from baroque to post-expressionist art and has (also a teacher) certainly influenced the young Austrian generation after him. This retrospective exhibition of works from the 1950s to this day was organised by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Galerie Ulysses, Vienna on the occasion of Rainer´s 70th birthday and offers a survey of Rainer´s oeuvre. The exhibition comprises important groups of his work, such as the overpaintings, his hand- and fingerpaintings, which have been on show at the Neue Galerie der Stadt Linz before, the famous crosses and many works on paper. Approximately 40 works from the collections of the Neue Galerie der Stadt Linz will complement the exhibition. Number of exhibits: about 170 catalogue/poster: The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue (English/ German) and a poster. The catalogue contains a number of very personal texts by Arnulf Rainer about his understanding of art in general and his work specifically, as well as some essays by Rudi Fuchs (director of the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam). The many illustrations (over 80) also give a great survey of Rainer´s oeuvre, from his early drawings and paintings in the 1950s to works, which were created in the last few years, beside a selection of his most outstanding collection of overpainted prints and books from the 19th century. |
