Expression and Meditation
The Rombold Collection in Linz

Private collections reflect individual interests and preferences of friends of the arts. Dependent on their financial possibilities and ambitions they do not have to refrain themselves. Their collections are particularly attractive because of their highly personal approach, different to public institutions and museum policies. The private collector has any liberty, after all he invests his own means. Museums and public institutions have to fulfill certain expectations, duties and responsibilities demanding a high standard of objectivity and scientific claim. Equally important for both public and private collections are quality and competence as well as a certain accentuation. Reception of a collection is in any case highly dependent on resonance and effect of the single work of art.

The clergyman and university professor for philosophy, DDr.Günter Rombold from Linz has dealt with art throughout his life. He has expressed his interest and predilection for modern painting, graphic, sculpture and modern ecclesiastic architecture in many lectures, talks, publications, exhibitions and through the edition of the monthly magazine "kunst und kirche". Consequently following his ideas he founded the Institute for Art and Ecclesiastic Architecture at the Linz College for Roman Catholic-Theology, which contributes largely to the dialogue between the church and contemporary art.

The private collection of Prof.Rombold comprises over 600 works, which have accompanied his life and reflect his attitude towards the arts. For the first time a selection of 250 exhibits will be on public show in the Neue Galerie der Stadt Linz, documented by an illustrated catalogue (available only in German). Rombold shows clear preferences for Alfred Kubin´s graphics and German expressionism, beside important works of Austrian post war art, particularly drawings and prints.

Through the confrontation of expression and meditation, divided into four chapters, works of Alfred Kubin, of Bilger, Barlach, Beckmann, Chagall, Corinth, Ensor, Heckel Kirchner, Kokoschka, Kollwitz, Schmidt-Rottluff, Rouault, of international artists such as Poliakoff, Manessier, Zadkine and the Austrians Anzinger, Frohner, Damisch, Hrdlicka, Mikl, Staudacher, Schmalix, Prachensky, Rainer, Urteil, Wotruba their works can be viewed by a larger public for the first time.
