| In analogy to a
grand artistic past with a particular tradition in painting, the art of
Spain in the 20th century also commands an extraordinary density of achievement
with many excellent innovative impulses. Whereas artists particularly
such as Picasso, Gonzalez, Dali and Miró attained lasting world
recognition in the first half of the 20th century, for the period from
1945 to the present, the same applies now especially to Antoni Tàpies
and Eduardo Chillida. For this reason, it was not only understandable, but even virtually an obligation for a museum such as the New Gallery of the City of Linz, which is oriented to enlarging its international collection, to take the artistic potential of Spain into consideration accordingly in its respective new acquisitions. What has been acquired by the New Gallery of the City of Linz through its director Peter Baum over the past 25 years is a contingent of about 120 works, which can be viewed as an homage to the art of Spain in its entirety for the first time from September 6, 2001 to January 6, 2002. Although the focus is on works on paper, on lithographs and etchings, several drawings and collages, these are also supplemented by the acquisition of important sculptural works by Baltasar Lobo and Amadeo Gabino. The most strongly and compactly represented artists in the Linz collection are Antoni Tàpies (with nearly 40 works), Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso and Eduardo Chillida, who is shown with a wonderful collaged ink drawing and selected original print works. In addition to Victor Mira, Jaume Plensa, today one of the leading Spanish artist of the middle generation, Hernandez Pijuan and Dario Villalba are other representatives of an internationally very well known phalanx of artists, who are additionally enhanced in the concrete example of the Linz presentation with single graphical works by Arroyo, Castillo, Goya, Sapere, Vallribera and Saura. The exhibition will be opened on September 6, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. by the Spanish Ambassador Dr. Raimondo Perez-Hernandez. A comprehensive catalogue of the acquisitions will be published in conjunction with the exhibition, which will be available for ATS 180,-. |
