VALIE EXPORT, Dotted Dice, 2022

The permanent installation created by the media and performance artist VALIE EXPORT (* 1940 Linz, AUT – lives in Vienna, AUT) is the latest addition to Forum Metall and is located in the open space at the north-eastern end of the Lentos.

Five dice appear as if they have frozen while being thrown along the gently sloping hill in the direction of the Danube embankment. The multiple levels of meaning associated with the dice interest the artist just as much as its surface feel and materiality. From harmless children’s games to the role it plays in thousand-year-old ritual and religious practices, or its significance for modern information and computer technology and the multitude of mathematical principles inherent in it – the dice opens up a wide range of opportunities for VALIE EXPORT to continue her artistic research into those issues which are of social relevance to our time.

The work was purchased with funds from the ​“Pact for Linz” and with the backing of the Friends of Lentos, the association that supports and promotes the art museum.
