Press kit: Being a Girl*!?
From Panel Painting to Social Media
30.10.25 to 06.04.26
What moves girls today, and what role models have been passed down to us from the past? Contemporary art often addresses representations of girls* through socially motivated themes: coming of age, tendencies toward self-optimization – frequently in interaction with social media – as well as fluid genders, and issues of diversity, interculturality, and inclusion.
Alongside early portraits and depictions of saints, female children and adolescents appear across many eras as models for artists or as expressions of blossoming life in tension with transience.
In nine thematic sections, the exhibition moves through several historical stages toward the era of digital transformation. With more than 150 works by international artists, it seeks to analyze and challenge the present situation by referencing representational modes from earlier times. By taking initiative, girls* show the world who they truly are!
