Press kit: Margit Palme
The Gaze
24.05. to 18.08.24

In her artistic work, Margit Palme (* 1939) translates her image of women, which is based on self-determination, strength and positivity, into vivid pictorial metaphors. She has been employing aquatint etching for more than six decades. Dynamic and occasionally provocative, Palme’s female protagonists strive to master their lives with skill and vigour in a world marked by patriarchal structures. In the various thematic focuses of the exhibition, the women recount their occupations, wishes and desires. In recent years, the artist has increasingly focussed on the addictions, compulsions and fears that challenge many people today. The artist’s highly topical oeuvre has recently attracted particular attention in international art circles. Therefore, discussing the special significance of Margit Palme’s aquatints for Austrian art with a focus on women has never been more relevant.
