Concert at the Stadtwerkstatt: Kinky Muppet

Katrin Plavčak (vocals, guitar), Nicholas Hoffman (vocals, baritone, bass, keyboards), and Oliver Stotz (samples & drums) take the stage at the Stadtwerkstatt in Linz as Kinky Muppet.

“Kinky” means quirky and offbeat, ​“Muppet” refers to a goofball or an American puppet, ​“Kinky Muppet” is the name of an artificial fishing lure, and Kinky Muppet is a band from Vienna. Their songs sometimes start off slowly, then they take the audience by surprise with cheerful, rumbling riffs, only to break out of the rut once again with unexpected bridges and rhythm changes. No predictability, but also no dullness.

The motto of Katrin Plavčak, Nicholas Hoffman, and Oliver Stotz seems to be: Avoid clichés at all costs, yet still stay true to rock ​’n’ roll. Elaborate chord progressions and solos on guitar and bass alternate with rousing choruses and contemplative, fantastical vocals, whose lyrics and rhythmic quirks — in their wonder and debauchery — are on par with neither Captain Beefheart nor Juana Molina. No wonder — after all, all three Kinkys (or Muppets?) are also well-versed in other art forms and are actively creating with drive and passion. They’re building a road in the middle of the street. Right? Right, right.
