Images of the City in Art 1909 – 2009
Stories on, with and about Linz are told on the basis of collection holdings from the Museums of the City of Linz (Lentos, Nordico – Museum of the City of Linz). Paintings, graphic works, photography, sculptures, film stills, objects, videos and examples of architecture, all from the last one hundred years, show the various stages of the development of Linz: selected examples from art and culture show the identity of the city.
The artists who have created works with a topographical reference to Linz have all had different motivations for doing so: it was where they were born, a place of residence, a place visited, a work place, education, chance. Some names have already been forgotten, some are closely linked with important impulses in the city, others will once again be rediscovered.
The exhibition Linz View addresses a curious audience interested in art. A topos, a place tells a story, a place writes. It is depicted, formed by people, by artists from the place, it is captured. This has to do with history (oral history), art history, literature and sociology. It is also a search for sensitivities, for descriptions, for images that make up these places. Topography is also the history of a city, a place, an area, a country. Places of art and culture, artists’ studios and residences, buildings; this also has to do with architecture – for buildings bear eloquent witness to the people of a city.
